Why Physics?

Physics is one of the most fundamental of all sciences.  It seeks to unlock the very nature of the physical universe and apply these discoveries in everyday life.  Educated with knowledge and skills that are applicable in diverse fields, physics majors go on to careers in engineering, medicine, research, education, and even investment banking, among others.  At SIUC, our School of Physics and Applied Physics maintains an assortment of cutting-edge facilities and equipment that our talented and accomplished faculty use to push the boundaries of the known universe.

Physics Specializations

Over the years, the basic principles of Physics have been applied to numerous branches of science ranging from Nanoscale Materials to Biological systems. SIUC Physics offers 4 tracks in undergraduate physics including; traditional Physics, Material Science / Nanophysics, Computational Physics, and Biomedical Physics. Students can apply directly for admission to any one of these tracks, or enter Physics in general and select a specialization later in their Undergraduate career. All these specialization tracks are designed to provide a strong foundation in their respective areas.
